Traffic Engineer I
Location: Public Works Department, Traffic/Transportation Unit
Reports to: Traffic/Transportation Unit Manager
Type: Exempt
Essential Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Provides technical engineering support and assists in the preparation of specifications for traffic
engineering on public works projects within the department.
• Assists traffic engineers and project managers on projects related to traffic capacity analysis, traffic
calming, ITS, traffic operations, safety analysis, and other related traffic engineering work.
• Assists in developing the city’s Intersection Operations and Safety Program.
• Reviews traffic control plans for Utility, Special Event, and Land Disturbance permits as well as public
works projects.
• Develops traffic control plans for city events.
• Reviews striping and signing plans and develops signing and striping plans.
• Conducts traffic operations and safety analyses to include field review and data collection.
• Provides customer service response.
Additional Functions:
• Performs other related duties as required.
• Subject to rotational after-hours on call responsibilities, also subject to participate Public Works
emergency response/severe weather operations.
- Requirements / Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
• Two (2) years of experience in engineering field or MS in Civil Engineering with a focus on
Transportation/Traffic Engineering ; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and
experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required:
• Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
• Registration as a EIT.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
• Knowledge of traffic engineering software like Synchro, HCS, SIDRA, and TORUS. Knowledge of the
Manual of Uniform Traffic Devices (MUTCD).
• Knowledge and application of MicroStation or AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
• Skill in Microsoft Office applications.
• Skill in communication, both verbally and in written form. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to
complete a multitude of tasks.
• Ability to use personal computer and software applications for creating spreadsheets, correspondence,
presentations, reports, databases, etc. Proficient in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
